First of all I don't intend to make a flame thread I'm just pointing out my observations.
I've been searching generasia for artist that I like to see how well they are doing in terms of sales. Recently I'm curious with female bands like Scandal, Stereopony, Chatmonchy, Gacharic Spin, Eu phoria so I checked all their single and albums to see the corresponding rankings and sales.
I arrived at the conclusion that they are not getting much love that they deserve, I just can't see why an all female band so talented and hot is struggling to enter the top ten spot for the first week of release. Among the more active bands (Chatmonchy, Scandal, Stereopony) Chatmonchy has the more solid fan based as evident in their last 3 release Hyoujou, Awa Come, and Last Love Letter with an Oricon ranking of 5, 6, 7. While for Scandal R-Girl's Rock!, Nanka Buttobase, Pride ranked 9,3,7. For Stereopony Over Drive, Over the Border, Chiisa na Mahou ranked 28,12,23. I thought with the popularity of K-On attention will be shifted to female bands but girl and boy groups still dominate the charts.
A reason maybe they are not getting the same promotional effort from their record companies as compared to the resources dedicated to Girl and Boy groups...
Or maybe the genre itself (all female band) is in a decline after Zone.
Anyone can share they're thoughts on why the female bands are not as Popular, Marketable, and Loved as girl and boy groups?
*Special mention Negoto... they have only 2 release so far a mini album ranked at 23rd and a single at 11th place for the first week.

i also don't know how to reply accurately because i have so very little knowledge of japanese music industry - what is the mainstream music there; what do the young, middle & old listen to; how music company compete & promote their artist and such.
but as for stereopony i have some ideas :
1) in their early days of their debut in an (forgot which one) they said they are not following any music genre, they are making their own music; stereopony music. what is consistent is that in each single/album there will be slow and fast songs, which can be pop, rock, ballad. maybe this is new in japan music and as with all new things it takes long to be well received.
2) the sad time when shiho got ill had a bad impact on the band, causing them to cancel their 2nd live tour and almost 6 months without activity. so the general public might forget about them as this gave the impression that other bands are more active. i believe this is the reason why they started the 'my name is stereopony' tour, to reach out to the public, meeting fans directly and spreading their music...then the earth shook and the sea crashed
3) korean bands entering japanese market (forgot which band, curently there are two i think) which adds more competition
4) sex appeal - this is one of the reasons why korean bands are damn bloody popular in my place, the singers wear sexy clothes & dance erotically. maybe its the same in japan

yappari VERY TRUE!
especially point #4, Stereopony isn't going for the "Idol" approach like mainstream groups. This limits the level of "fanboying" or "fangirling" for the group, and i'm pretty sure we all know that the Japanese love Idols.
Maybe in the near future Stereopony will get recognised for their honest talent instead of just looks (Y)

Another reason would be that people can just simply download single/album from the internet which in turns led to a down in sales and thus their single/album not getting much love in the oricon charts

Oricon doesn't mean all. Only some stores count for Oricon.

If that's the case it's the whole industry that is affected not only the female bands so piracy is immaterial...
Hope they will start a trend that will put them more in the spotlight, I just really admire female bands because of their ability to play musical instruments rather than the typical sing and dance group.

Oricon doesn't mean all. Only some stores count for Oricon. Yes it doesn't mean all but it gives you the general picture of how an artist fair overall in the music industry.... is there other charts that can substitute oricon?

The first thing I want to say is that Chatmonchy has been around about three times longer than Stereopony has, so I think that they should have a more solid fanbase.
As for Stereopony's rankings, I think they're right in my opinion. OVER DRIVE is my least favorite of their singles to be honest... I liked the B-side Niji Bashi better, actually. OVER THE BORDER was close to breaking the top 10, at least. Chiisana Mahou's ranking is the one that surprises me. My thoughts on this...
1. Tegami Bachi isn't that popular of an anime in Japan compared to their previous anime tie-ins 2. amat_amit1's post:

2) the sad time when shiho got ill had a bad impact on the band, causing them to cancel their 2nd live tour and almost 6 months without activity. so the general public might forget about them as this gave the impression that other bands are more active.
As for girl and boy groups... I guess it is apparent that pop and hip hop is more popular than rock in today's society. That's how it is here in California and the rest of the United States at least. Right now, I don't think there's a popular mainstream girl rock band on the radio. The only person I can think of who comes close is Hayley Williams from the band Paramore, but that isn't an all-girl band. The difference between Paramore and Stereopony is the "punk rockness" of their songs.
My guess, aside from the girl/boy groups, is that the girl bands are being overshadowed by the more popular boy bands who can pump out the harder rock music (who sound amazing in my opinion actually).
Stereopony has it rough right now. They lose in sex appeal to the girl pop groups and they lose out in the "rock" genre to other rock bands. People want music that they can either dance to or jump/fistpump/yell to. Stereopony seems to be stuck in the middle. This is probably why SCANDAL is more popular than them. From what I've seen and heard of their songs, they seem to jump from one side of the spectrum to the other. At one point they'll be dancing all cutesy like and then at another point they'll be head banging or yelling.
The reason I say Stereopony is stuck in the middle is because they don't go to the extremes like SCANDAL does... You get your little dose of dancing from NOHANA, hard rock from SHIHO, and AIMI gives a bit of both as well as a nice voice to keep everything together.
There's nothing wrong with that though. I hate a majority of the American mainstream music right now, so Stereopony's sound appeals to me.
The Competition Girl Groups -SNSD -Wonder Girls -KARA -It's endless to how many groups there are
Rock Bands -ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION -FLOW -MAXIMUM THE HORMONE (just one girl out of four members) -Ikimono Gakari (just one girl out of three members) -etc.

well i guess rs's point is almost similar to my 1st point - stereopony music is sorta like a new genre, which is kinda difficult for normal ppl to accept...that means all stepo fans, lovers and addicts are special ppl, yappari
